David Lloyd George, when Chancellor of the Exchequer, was once addressing the House of Commons on the Insurance Bill.

Some M.P.s complained that because Lloyd-George was facing the Chair with his back to the majority of members they could not hear what he said, "There is my difficulty", replied Lloyd-George, "I have been told to address the Chair."

"Address the Chair", came the reply, "but speak in this direction;"

"That," said Lloyd George, "would involve something that I never do — facing both ways."
